4 tips on how to get the most out of your soul filter
1. Storage & Care
The Soulfilter is designed as a portable water filter . While it can easily handle daily use, it's not quite as convenient for that. Between trips, it's best stored in a cool, dry place, protected from dust – for example, in a kitchen drawer or pantry.
When you use it again, you can start right away: soaking or rinsing is not necessary , because the filter cleans the water every time it is used.
However, you can clean the mouthpiece . It's dishwasher safe, but the gentlest and most thorough way is to clean it by hand with a little mild dish soap and a small brush (🤫currently available for €1 when you buy soulfilter products). This way, you'll enjoy it for the longest time. For stubborn stains or if you want to prevent bacterial growth, you can boil the mouthpiece.
2. Uncomplicated change
A tip from our lovely soulie Alina: Since the soulfilter , unlike our clip closure , is not designed to fly around loose in the backpack, she simply carries her soulbottle in the outer pocket – where it usually stands upright.
This eliminates the need for constant lid changes : The standard swing-top closure remains on the bottle, while the Soulfilter can be quickly attached. The silicone mouthpiece adheres securely enough to withstand minor vibrations without coming loose.
This makes assembly incredibly easy , and if needed, you can always completely seal your soulbottle with its original closure – for example, overnight or when you are in a place where you can get safe drinking water.
3. Use Soulcap without a filter – this will make it (almost) airtight.
Another trick from the team: The mouthpiece of our soulfilter (also available separately as the soulcap ) has a small drawback – without a filter cartridge, it's not completely airtight . A few drops, or even more, can end up in your backpack, on your child, or in your lap.
Laura, the soul cap owner, has found a clever solution: She reused a discarded silicone straw from another drinking bottle – and lo and behold, the soulcap then only releases the small amount of water that is in the straw itself.
And the best part: no more lifting the soulbottle, just drink it horizontally.
This also works with a silicone tube from a hardware store or pet supply store, or a metal straw (approximately 10mm outer diameter). If you want to be extra careful, you can simply empty out any remaining water before storing it. However, we still recommend transporting it upright , for example in the outer pocket of your backpack.
4. Difficult to drink? – Shortening the valve helps.
The first generation of our Soulfilter was a bit demanding: you had to pull quite hard to get water through. This suction is important for the filter's effectiveness , but it becomes bothersome over time. Better pressure equalization will improve the situation.
Try temporarily removing the valve (the small black silicone part in the mouthpiece) to see if it's easier to use. If the flow improves, you can shorten the valve slightly and reinsert it .
Don't worry: We have the part available as a spare part in our shop – in case it comes loose during cleaning and ends up down the drain.
We hope these tips will take away your apprehension about soulfilter and make it even easier to use.
Have wonderful hikes and explorations – with clear, filtered water wherever your journey takes you. 💧
